What does the treasure you are looking for look like? Would you even recognize it if you found it? These thoughts have been running through my mind as I mildly pay attention to the political campaigns. I pay enough attention to know what people hate. But, I’m not sure what they want. This leads me to wonder if any of us would even recognize the treasure of good government if we saw it. Or, will we only see what we still don’t have?
When it comes to family or personal life, what treasure do you seek? When you go to bed at night what do you hope to be, to have, and to experience? Somewhere all of us have a reasonable vision of what we hope our lives will be like. I’ve walked with the fears of several parents as they worried about their children’s future. Once the cause of their fear is resolved, they often find a new fear to latch on to. Will any of us be able to recognize the treasure of a good life?
Jesus presents the kingdom of heaven as a treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid. Then in all joy the person sells everything to purchase that field. This is a very simple parable. Heaven is a treasure and you should do everything to get it. But the older I get, I wonder about my own ability to see the hidden treasure.
Hidden treasures are not always hidden. Many times they are right in front of us. We don’t see them because we think they should be concealed. Before you start looking, it probably would be a good idea to figure out what the treasure looks like? Then finding it would be simpler. It might be right in front of you. (Mt. 13: 44-46)
