“For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands” 2Tim 1:6
I really, really love teaching confirmation. It is one of the greatest joys of my being back in a congregation. This does not mean it comes easy. Most evenings it feels like I’m herding cats. The average junior high student does not want to be there. They consider the things related to faith boring and irrelevant.
Last night was a perfect example of what I find life-giving about confirmation. Walking into the room, all the students were lost in their cell phones. They made every attempt to avoid eye contact with me so they would not give any indication of interest. We did nothing too exotic: a team building exercise, a challenge to act out the story and a small craft project. It took a lot of energy to get these simple tasks done.
The power of the evening was weaving together all of these seemingly separate activities into one comprehensive message. I could see the wheels spinning inside their heads. They we’re beginning to grasp why faith was important and relevant to their life. The same thing was happening to the adults who volunteered to stay and help.
Confirmation lessons force me to simplify the language, focus on the most basic elements and then make a connection with the realities of daily life. In a way, it helps me, the teacher, as much as the students “rekindle the gift of God that is within” them.
It’s easy to lose sight of the blessings we receive during the course of daily living. Work can become a grind. The culture can be exhausting. A feeling of hopelessness can consume the soul. We, like Timothy, need to be reminded of the love God has poured out upon us and continues to give even when life is a struggle. Open your heart to love and rekindle the gift of hope God has placed within you.
